Thrifting in Gainesville

Considering much of the Gainesville area consists of college students, it is fair to assume that they have a limited budget, however, having a limited budget does not mean that you can’t have awesome style at a great price. There are several thrift and consignment stores in the area that will help not just college students but anyone on a budget keep up with fashion trends as well as not break the bank.

Plato’s Closet, located on 3441 W. University Ave, is one of the more well known stores that not only has heels, dresses and skirts, but also attire for men as well.  Open from 10 am to 9 pm on Monday through Saturday and noon to 6 pm on Sunday, it is an ideal place to snatch up cute clothes for low prices.

Sandy’s, on 4148 NW 13th St, is a resale boutique that not only has clothes, shoes, jewelry and perfumes but also furniture and home décor. The store’s inventory is always growing so be sure to visit them Monday through Saturday from 10 am to 7 pm or Sunday from noon to 6 pm.

An up and coming thrift store on 2222 NW 6th St, Parciphony, may be one of the best bargains you can find in Gainesville with all of their clothes being just $1.99! Not only do they have clothes, but shoes, jewelry and even books. Being on a budget has not been easier with stores like these in the area!

The Oaks Mall

Gainesville is home to many different attractions and places to visit for your shopping pleasures, but everyone who is anyone in the Alachua County area knows that one of the best places to shop in all of Gainesville is The Oaks Mall. The Oaks Mall is located at 6419 Newberry Road, Gainesville Fl, and is driving distance from nearly everywhere in Gainesville.

The Oaks Mall opened in 1978 and has been providing locals and tourists with more than enough shopping and dining options for their preferences ever since. The Oaks Mall offers many different types of shops for men and women of all ages such as Hollister, Buckle, Guess, Victoria’s Secret, etc and of course anchor department stores like Macy’s, Belk, J.C. Penny, Sears, and Dillards.

The Oaks Mall offers multiple services outside of shopping such as harboring a Fed Ex Drop Off Station, offering High Speed Wireless Internet Access, Stroller Rentals, and an ATM for those of you who thought you would need a lot less money than you actually do. Also, for all you dads out there, while mom is trying on 70 different pairs of jeans at the Gap, you and the little ones can spend as much time as needed in the complimentary Children’s Play Area located between Macy’s and Sears.

Like previously stated, it’s really easy to get to the Oaks Mall by car (or scooter for all the college kids), but it’s also easy to visit if you do not have transportation because the Oaks has a bus stop for the RTS system in Gainesville located right outside of Macy’s. Buses 5, 75, 23, and 20 all stop at the Mall and routes 5 and 20 run until 10:30 pm and route 75 runs until 7:30 pm on weekdays. If you go to www.go-rts.com and look at the RTS Trip Planner at the bottom right hand corner of the page, you will be able to get stop-by-stop directions on exactly how to get to and from the Oaks Mall from wherever you are, so whether you’re looking for clothing, fine dining, or entertainment, take a second (or a few hours) out of your day in Gainesville to visit the best place for shopping in our town.
