When you are planning on moving out of your apartment there are a few things you can do to make this process go smoothly. Some of the stress from moving out can comes from not being sure if you will have your security deposit refunded to you. Here are some things you can do to help ensure you will.
Notify you Landlord of your intentions to move out or renew your lease. Your lease will specify the time frame in which you must give notice. Landlords need time to make your apartment ready and find a new tenant. Be sure you are aware of this time frame and give notice before the deadline.
Clean your apartment back to the state it was when you moved in. This will prevent anything from being deducted from your deposit to pay for a cleaning crew. Take time to repair anything you may have damaged such as marks on the floors, walls or baseboards. Another thing that helps is to have photos available from when you moved in. This documents you are leaving the apartment in the same condition in which you leased it, as well as shows any damage that may have already been there.
If you have cleaned your apartment, made necessary repairs, and removed all of your belongings and trash you should have no worries in recouping your deposit. It may take a few weeks to receive a check, but you will be happy you made the extra effort.
